Alfredo Guzmán
Mr. Guzman demonstrates a consistent track record of impactful leadership and technical expertise within the petroleum industry, particularly in Mexico. Their two nominations for the presidency of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) between 2004 and 2014 indicate recognition and respect within the international geological community. Further solidifying their standing, they were appointed by the Mexican President as a charter commissioner of the newly formed National Hydrocarbons Commission in 2008, placing them at the forefront of shaping Mexico’s energy policy.
A significant achievement was their overhaul of Pemex’s exploration function. Prior to their intervention, the company’s exploration portfolio was limited, hindering its ability to discover and develop new resources. By implementing a new evaluation process, they dramatically expanded the portfolio, identifying over 2,500 potential opportunities compared to the previous count of fewer than 40.
Their leadership in the rejuvenation of the Burgos Basin gas production in the mid-1990s stands out as a remarkable success.
They directed a project that increased daily production from a mere 180 million cubic feet (MMcfd) to an impressive 1,650 MMcfd.
This substantial increase was achieved through the discovery of over 90 new gas fields, resulting in a dramatic rise in the basin’s estimated ultimate recovery (EUR) from 10 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) to 26.5 Tcf. This project demonstrated their ability to identify and capitalize on overlooked resources, significantly boosting Mexico’s gas production capacity.
